Handshake supports improved sponsor and project outcomes by providing unique ways of communicating and connecting to team members, users, as well as a broad range of expertise and experiences. Since the initial rollout of Handshake in 2009, participants have set up more than 1,250 Handshake communities with more than 10,400 members; one-third of them are non-MITRE employees. Handshake is built on an open source community (Elgg), and many enhancements have been contributed back to the open source community for others to use. Handshake has received gold-level recognition from the international Internet Innovation Awards.
