At MITRE, our knowledge-sharing culture extends beyond the corporation and our customers. We collaborate widely with the community of practitioners—including academia, industry, and other non-profits—to advance the discipline and practice of systems engineering. MITRE staff also publish in the open literature, including conference proceedings, technical journals, and books.
We invite the systems engineering community to explore our many resources.
The Systems Engineering Guide
MITRE created this reference guide to convey its accumulated knowledge on a wide range of systems engineering subjects. More than 100 subjects are addressed within its 500 pages.
MITRE Systems Engineering Competency Model
This model reflects MITRE's brand of systems engineering, which is a government view and approach to systems engineering. In our independent partner role as an operator of federally funded research and development centers, we take the government's view and support its needs. Government contractors have a somewhat different model than the one described here.

Key Questions for Acquisition Success
Designed for program managers, systems engineers, and contract specialists, Key Questions for Acquisition Success focuses on acquisition program challenges currently confronting the federal government. The guide addresses a range of acquisition programs—including large, major acquisitions as well as more agile acquisition methods—and includes affordability, efficiency, and effectiveness best practices.
MITRE has developed a set of systems engineering toolkits. They include best practices and lessons we've learned while helping develop, field, and sustain complex systems. The following toolkits are currently available:
We expect more toolkits will be available in the future.
White Paper Series
In addition to advising specific government programs, we've made our guidance available in a downloadable series of white papers. Papers may be downloaded in .zip or .zipx formats. We've also made "Ahead in the Clouds"—an online forum featuring MITRE cloud computing experts and thought-leaders from industry—available as a PDF. These conversations, which took place in 2010 and 2011, remain a valuable resource for IT managers exploring the uses of the cloud.
MITRE and CRC Press Enterprise Systems Engineering Book Series
MITRE and scientific publisher CRC Press have teamed up to produce a series of books on enterprise systems engineering. To date, six books have been published (some co-authored with individuals from other institutions):
- Engineering Mega-Systems: The Challenge of Systems Engineering in the Information Age
- Enterprise Systems Engineering: Advances in the Theory and Practice
- Model-Oriented Systems Engineering Science
- Probability Methods for Cost Uncertainty Analysis: A Systems Engineering Perspective
- Analytical Methods for Risk Management: A Systems Engineering Perspective
- Advanced Risk Analysis in Engineering Enterprise Systems
MITRE Contributions to Engineering Education Book
MITRE President and Chief Executive Officer Al Grasso and other MITRE staff contributed to Holistic Engineering Education: Beyond Technology, which is published by Springer Science and Business Media and described by the publisher as "a compilation of coordinated and focused essays from world leaders in the engineering profession who are dedicated to a transformation of engineering education and practice."
