MITRE Labs
Through our Innovation Centers, we’re applying the objectivity and expertise of 4,000+ technical staff across a wide range of disciplines.
MITRE Labs inspires breakthroughs in applied science and advanced technology to transform the future of U.S. scientific and economic leadership. Our goal: Deliver disruptive innovation to support our mission of solving problems for a safer world.
How? By bringing significant resources—people, technology innovation, and knowledge sharing processes—to scale MITRE’s impact through our federally funded research and development centers. By strengthening competitiveness in a world where dual-use technologies like artificial intelligence and quantum computing can be game-changers for our nation’s security and economy. And by applying the objectivity and expertise of 4,000+ technical staff across a wide range of disciplines, including our Fellows, all preeminent in their fields.
In our 15 Innovation Centers, under the guidance of our office of the chief futurist, we’re confronting some of today’s biggest challenges: Stopping cyber theft of intellectual property by foreign governments. Defeating adversaries who are mobile and hard to track. Securing microelectronics and pharmaceutical supply chains. And through our talent, platforms, partnerships, and vision, we’re focused on strengthening the vital U.S. missions and industries of the future.
Building on more than 65 years’ experience working across government, we’re stimulating new ways of thinking and action to tackle national and global challenges, in partnership with industry and academia. We’re extending MITRE’s whole-of-government platform to whole-of-nation impact, ensuring the U.S. leads the world in scientific and technological innovation.

Horizon Strategy
The current model for U.S. innovation has fallen short in the face of today’s technology competition challenges. The executive and legislative branches of the U.S. government have proposed bold new approaches to supporting innovation and U.S. competitive success in Science and Technology (S&T), but the challenge for America is how to shape such an ambitious new push.
MITRE brings to bear thousands of scientists, engineers, and analysts, as well as decades of experience gained through its operation of federally funded research and development centers (FFRDCs) and public-private partnerships.
MITRE has also proposed a "Horizon Strategy" Framework for Science and Technology Policy for the U.S. innovation economy and America's competitive success. This paper, along with several other thought pieces, technical papers, and op-eds, outlines how the U.S. should wisely invest in technology development and engage in global leadership for our nation’s security and economic prosperity for generations to come.
