Chief of Policy, Defense Innovation Unit

Sunmin Kim is the Chief of Policy at the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). In this role, Kim drives DIU’s policy and governance initiatives while managing the Defense Innovation Community of Entities. Previously, she served as Chief of the Policy Division, at the U.S. Department of Defense Joint Artificial Intelligence Center, where she led a team responsible for developing new and updating existing DoD policies that most impact AI development and fielding. She also chaired the DoD AI Working Group and managed the DoD AI Executive Steering Group. And as acting Responsible AI lead, she wrote and coordinated DoD’s first Responsible AI implementation plan. 

Prior to DoD, she was an advisor and technical expert for U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, ranking member of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet (CTII).  She led the drafting and passage into law the OPEN Government Data Act, the AI in Government Act, and other bills on emerging technology. 

Outside government service, she was the Director of Public Policy at Applied Intuition, where she led the company's public policy strategy and non-defense public-sector business development. She was also a Technology Editor at The Economist Group and co-founder of Pro Journo, a journalism nonprofit.
