MITRE Names Julie Bowen Senior Vice President
McLean, Va., May 31, 2017—The MITRE Corporation has promoted Julie Bowen to senior vice president.
Bowen has served as vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary since 2014, responsible for MITRE's legal, government relations, ethics and compliance programs.
"As we address new challenges at both the national and global level, the board of trustees and I believe that Julie's expertise and judgment are essential for our success," said Dr. Jason Providakes, MITRE's president and chief executive officer. "Her guidance as we navigate the variety of risks inherent to federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) work programs has been, and will continue to be, deeply valued by MITRE's board, sponsors and executives. Beyond her legal expertise, her insight into our sponsors' challenges and ability to create partnerships and relationships to advance our sponsor's missions will have significant impact in this expanded role."
MITRE operates seven FFRDCs, sponsored by defense and civilian agencies. These FFRDCs provide systems engineering innovations for our nation's most critical challenges in defense and intelligence, aviation, civil systems, homeland security, the judiciary, healthcare and cybersecurity.
Bowen joined MITRE in 2006 as associate general counsel. Within MITRE, she directed the technology transfer program, developing policies and practices for patents and licensing of MITRE-developed technologies. During her tenure, MITRE has executed 710 licenses and been issued 112 patents. Previously, she held senior legal and public affairs positions in industry and government.
Bowen is an active member of industry, academic and professional groups including the Executive Circle Advisory Board of the Northern Virginia Technology Council, the Board of Visitors of The Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law and the Association of Corporate Counsel. She has also performed pro-bono work for legal aid organizations with a focus on defending the rights of women, children and the homeless.
Bowen holds a bachelor's degree and a law degree from The Catholic University of America.
