MITRE Partners with Nine Universities Through Our New University Innovation Exchange

Richmond Virginia

McLean, Va., and Bedford, Mass., June 20, 2019—MITRE today announced the signing of a master agreement with nine Virginia public universities as part of its newly launched MITRE University Innovation Exchange.

MITRE’s University Innovation Exchange is a partnership among participating Virginia public universities, the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), the Virginia Economic Development Partnership (VEDP), and the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA).

Under this program, MITRE collaborates with universities to quickly access academia’s creative ideas and capabilities to deliver innovative solutions where none currently exist to meet government’s most critical needs.

“We have an opportunity to develop a new innovation construct with this partnership,” said John Kreger, vice president of MITRE’s Public Sector Programs within our Center for Programs and Technology. “We’ll bring many perspectives to bear to create faster, more cost-efficient solutions for our government sponsors’ greatest challenges.”

The University Innovation Exchange enables MITRE to leverage academic research and ideas, conduct joint research, and work with university professors and students. The program also allows us to employ top undergraduate and graduate students as interns and full-time employees.

“MITRE's University Innovation Exchange will increase collaboration among Virginia's businesses, higher education institutions, and the U.S. government to address needs in fields like cybersecurity, national security, aviation, and healthcare, among others," said Nancy Price with the VEDP.

“We’re proud to engage with MITRE and some of Virginia’s esteemed universities, SCHEV, and FCEDA to support the pressing research and technology needs of our nation's government. This also provides new opportunities for universities to apply their research and opens additional avenues for commercializing innovation."

Participating universities include Christopher Newport University, William & Mary, George Mason University, James Madison University, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia State University.

MITRE's mission-driven teams are dedicated to solving problems for a safer world. Through our public-private partnerships and federally funded R&D centers, we work across government to tackle challenges to the safety, stability, and well-being of our nation.
