Systematic AI-FMEA for Effective Risk Assessment

MITRE’s novel risk analysis technology known as Systematic AI-FMEA for Effective Risk Assessment, or SAFER, combines the use of multimodal generative artificial intelligence (AI) in conjunction with performing a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA). This combination reduces the resources needed to perform the traditionally expensive and time-consuming process of risk assessment and provides a more complete and accurate analysis.

SAFER addresses the problem of identifying and prioritizing potential failures in processes, allowing organizations to proactively address issues that might compromise reliability and safety of processes and products. The initial use case explored by the MITRE research team was to apply SAFER to electronic health records (EHR). The SAFER software performs AI-enhanced risk assessments by analyzing screen recordings of EHR workflows and leveraging widely used FMEA principles to assess risks related to patient safety, usability, and privacy. Using AI for video analysis allows for rapid, accurate detection of potential issues, while FMEA principles provide a structured approach to identifying and mitigating system failures. The result of combining AI with FMEA is savings in cost, time, and resources; a more comprehensive risk assessment; and a scalable process for healthcare and many other industries.
