MITRE's VANTAGE seeks to catalyze development for Very Low Earth Orbit, the next frontier in space.

As the space industry pushes boundaries, Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) is emerging as a transformative new frontier. At altitudes far below traditional Low Earth Orbit (LEO), VLEO can offer significant advantages in remote sensing, spacecraft resilience, and maneuverability. However, operating in this orbital regime introduces new challenges, such as atmospheric drag and intricate system interdependencies, that demand innovative solutions. Enter VANTAGE, a cutting-edge tool developed by MITRE to unlock the potential of VLEO missions.

VANTAGE combines advanced aerodynamic analysis, mission modeling, and Multi-Disciplinary Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) techniques to design spacecraft tailored for the unique challenges of VLEO. By optimizing mechanical designs and orbital trajectories, it pushes for peak performance in this demanding low-altitude environment. What sets VANTAGE apart from current commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) and government off-the-shelf (GOTS) solutions is its mission-in-the-loop approach, which integrates specific mission objectives directly into the optimization process. This ensures spacecraft designs are not only technically robust but also strategically aligned with mission goals. 

A key application of VANTAGE is its role in advancing air-breathing electric propulsion (ABEP) systems, which harvest atmospheric particles to generate thrust. These propulsion systems are pivotal for overcoming drag and enabling long-term operations in VLEO. VANTAGE leverages a multi-tiered design and simulation environment to support users through each stage of development for this next-generation class of spacecraft, from the initial identification of operating requirements to the optimization and validation of system performance for a given mission application.
