Dahmann has played a pioneering role in creating the field of Systems of Systems Engineering
Systems Engineering Pioneer Judith Dahmann Named MITRE Fellow
Bedford, Mass., and McLean, Va., July 24, 2024 – MITRE named Judith Dahmann, PhD., a MITRE Fellow, a distinguished group of senior MITRE technical experts who are nationally recognized innovation leaders. Dahmann joined MITRE in 1973 and will lead an initiative to advance systems of systems engineering (SoSE) in the world’s rapidly changing technological and economic landscape.
“Judith has made many contributions to countless projects through her pioneering work in SoSE,” said Charles Clancy, senior vice president and chief technology officer. “Systems engineering has been a fundamental part of MITRE’s technical work since our founding and continues to be a primary R&D focus with our sponsors and partners. Judith’s invaluable expertise and leadership will help accelerate how we connect.”
Dahmann has spent more than 50 years at MITRE, working across domains to share her expertise in SoSE. In 2017 she was named an International Council on Systems Engineering Fellow for “innovation and leadership in evolving and promulgating the practice of systems of systems engineering.”
Since being named a MITRE Technical Fellow in 2020, Dahmann has contributed her expertise to a range of high-priority and visible efforts, including critical national security initiatives.
She has served as the Department of Defense (DoD) modeling and simulation chief scientist and led the development of a general-purpose distributed system architecture for simulation. The work formed the intellectual foundation for IEEE standard 1516, which prescribes the framework and rules for modeling and simulation of high-level architectures. Dahmann was also the technical lead for development of the DoD guide for systems engineering of systems of systems.
MITRE Fellows are a select group of preeminent scientists in their fields who direct high-risk scientific or technical initiatives to address national or global challenges. They serve as subject matter experts and advisers to mission-critical programs, officers, and our Board of Trustees. The MITRE Fellows program has a history of deeply impactful work to the nation and world, including the Global Positioning System. MITRE Fellows include Dahmann, Gerry Gilbert, Ph.D., Marc Salit, Ph.D., and Fellow Emeritus John Betz, Ph.D.
