MITRE’s SHADOW innovates in multidisciplinary analysis and optimization, providing better-than-ever solutions to harder-than-ever problems.

System-Holistic Analysis and Design Optimization Workflow (SHADOW)
In advanced physical systems design, engineering teams often work in silos, exchanging information only through reports or ad-hoc file transfers. As engineering problems grow more complex and high-quality solutions are required more quickly, this disconnect becomes increasingly problematic.
To address this challenge, a shift toward digital engineering and integrated modeling is underway. A frontline facilitator and innovator, SHADOW is a software solution through which all tools relevant to the design, modeling, simulation, and operation of a physical system can be connected, analyzed, and optimized as one network. This approach captures the interdependencies between physics-level performance and system-level trades, enabling more accurate system modeling, improved design optimization results, and accelerated development timelines.
SHADOW differs from other tools for multi-disciplinary analysis and optimization in that it is tailored for especially complex optimization problems at the system and system-of-systems level.
SHADOW features intelligent processes for constraint handling and offers state-of-the-art algorithms for design optimization, all wrapped in an intuitive graphical interface. These capabilities improve computational efficiency and simplify user experience, making it possible to solve impactful problems that were previously out of reach. SHADOW is flexible and can be used across industries, supporting engineers in multidisciplinary analysis or design work—from optimizing renewable energy systems to creating next-generation aerospace technologies.
