Collaboration Strengthens the Seafood Industry
New England accounts for just 7% of America’s coastline, yet it generates 25% of the nation’s seafood value. Recognizing the region’s potential, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) announced $15 million in funding last month for the New England-based NSF Seafood Engine, an initiative aimed at boosting the seafood industry through cutting-edge technology.
Moving technology from lab to sea: As partners and members of the Seafood Engine leadership team, MITRE is facilitating collaboration among dozens of tech, government, and seafood industry partners.
“This effort gives us an opportunity to help connect a powerful regional ecosystem, strengthen secure data-sharing infrastructure, and accelerate the transition of emerging technologies into practice for industry, communities, and federal partners,” says Nick Rotker, MITRE’s chief bluetech strategist.
Big picture: The technological solutions can be rolled out nationwide, propelling the American seafood industry to a stronger global market position.

Disrupting Illicit Virtual Assets Through Public-Private Partnership
As the popularity of digital assets (cryptocurrencies, stablecoins) grows, so does the opportunity for criminal activity. MITRE created a government-backed resource that enables organizations to securely share information about emerging threats.
Illicit Virtual Asset Notification (IVAN) is a voluntary public-private collaboration used in multiple countries. Vetted partners can alert one another to shady activity while protecting and maintaining ownership of their data. IVAN is designed to remain free of commercial conflicts of interest and accessible to qualified organizations committed to disrupting digital crime.
Why it matters: By improving collaboration across sectors and borders, IVAN helps organizations collaboratively determine and implement better ways to detect, investigate, and respond to illicit cryptocurrency activity. Ultimately, the resource creates a safer, more resilient digital asset ecosystem.

Earlier this year, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced a major investment in two AI centers focused on advanced manufacturing and critical infrastructure cybersecurity. Every time you drive, your vehicle generates data that could help researchers better understand what happens on the road. Think: vehicle performance, driver behavior, roadway conditions, and crashes. But using that information also raises questions about privacy and proprietary vehicle information.
A new MITRE paper proposes design considerations for enabling independent safety research while limiting data access to only what’s necessary for research purposes.
Bottom line: More vehicle data could expand the evidence available for transportation safety research. A responsible framework can help protect the people, information, and trust involved.
