MITRE Partners with Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology to Strengthen Security for Tokyo's 2020 Olympics

The MITRE Corporation and Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to partner on strengthening security for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The MoU was signed by MITRE President & CEO Jason Providakes and NICT's President Hideyuki Tokuda at MITRE's McLean, Va. campus in August. The partnership will help the two organizations explore issues of cybersecurity, sensors, artificial intelligence as well as security around the Olympics.

"I hope this is a very important first step," Takodu said, citing Japan's concerns around providing cybersecurity for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

Built over the last year, MITRE and NICT's relationship is an example of the type of research partnerships MITRE is forging to address global issues, such as cybersecurity, faced by its federal sponsors and allies.

"We're excited to have you as partners for some of these big global problems," said Rich Byrne, Senior Vice President of Programs and Technology at MITRE.

To help the Japanese prepare for the 2020 Olympics, MITRE tapped Oliver Hoare, who was the chief information security officer for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

"With the combination of his successful Olympic experience and MITRE's deep technical expertise, we can provide Japan with the level and type of support that cannot be found anywhere else," said Barbara Grewe, MITRE Portfolio Manager of International Strategy and Policy.
