Who We Are

MITRE works with the Federal Aviation Administration to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world and to meet the evolving needs of the nation's airspace.

We have supported the FAA's mission for over 50 years and operated its FFRDC since 1990. Currently, CAASD works closely with the FAA to develop NextGen—the next-generation air transportation system. NextGen will open America's skies to continued growth and increased safety with reduced environmental impact.

CAASD provides the FAA with advanced technical capabilities in systems engineering, mathematics, and computer science. We apply in-depth domain knowledge in air traffic management and airspace user operations relevant to the National Airspace System (NAS). We use our unique laboratories, modeling, simulation, and analytic capabilities to evaluate improvements to current systems. We also use these assets to envision future operations to incorporate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and commercial space traffic seamlessly into the evolving NAS.

Combining the skills and talents of our staff and our analytical resources, we continue to work with the FAA to improve the capacity, efficiency, and safety of the NAS, to define future systems and operations, and to achieve global harmonization of aviation systems.

CAASD also performs work for international civil aviation authorities, airport operators, airlines, and other aviation organizations to enhance air traffic management worldwide.
