Where We Focus

At CAASD, our systems engineers and researchers deliver effective solutions to aviation's most critical issues. Our work is wide-ranging—from developing new concepts for air traffic management or engineering standards for new systems to assessing the impact of aviation improvements on the nation’s economy. All our work reflects MITRE's commitment to providing real-world guidance with objectivity and technical excellence.

One of our primary focus areas is the continued development and implementation of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). Now that the FAA is completing the implementation of major foundational infrastructure improvements, much of our effort has turned to the applications and procedures that will build on that infrastructure to provide important benefits.

Recognizing that NextGen requires active participation across the aviation community, we are working with the FAA, airspace users, industry, and the Department of Defense to prioritize and develop concepts and plans for key capabilities. Simultaneously, we are applying our aviation expertise and operational knowledge to introduce safety, security, and performance improvements in the near term.

We also work with civil aviation authorities around the world to improve aviation safety and efficiency, to help harmonize the evolution of air traffic management services globally, and to leverage the most effective technologies developed in the United States and elsewhere. A continuing program of research, development, and engineering conducted in collaboration with the aviation community supports our work to advance the safety and efficiency of aviation across the globe.
